Halloween is upon us, and I am all giddy with anticipation. Halloween and Christmas are forever jockeying for position as my favorite holiday at Walt Disney World. At the moment, I can’t help but go with Halloween, though ask me in a few weeks and that may change. I’ve spent the last few weeks exploring some of the spooky delights found throughout the parks, but this week I think I’ll simply muse about what I love about Halloween in Walt Disney World.
So, without further ado (and in no particular order) here are things I love about Halloween at my home away from home:
Decorations On Main Street
Nothing fills my heart with joy quite like stepping onto Main Street USA and seeing it all decked out for Halloween and the fall season. Though the outside world has dictated some changes within the park this year, the wreaths of multi-colored leaves and the Mickey Mouse jack-o-lanterns heads give me a warm, comfy feeling. It’s like I just drank a big, steaming cup of apple cider. Throw in the “spooky” music playing everywhere and it is sheer perfection.
Halloween Treats
I’m a bit obsessed with food, and the Halloween treats at Walt Disney World are absolutely to die for (if you’ll excuse the pun). There’s pumpkin spice flavored everything, the Not-So-Poisoned Apple Cupcake, popcorn in novelty buckets galore, Constance’s For Better or Worse Wedding cake, and on and on and on. I could write an epic poem about the wonders of Walt Disney World food, but I’ll spare you. Suffice it to say I love it.
The Cadaver Dans
There’s nothing quite so charming and full of nostalgia as a good barbershop quartet. The only thing better? A barbershop quartet made up of undead cowboys. While the Dapper Dans are usually on Main Street, the Cadaver Dans can be found in Frontierland, singing frightful classics like, “Oogie Boogie’s Song,” “The Headless Horseman,” “Grim Grinning Ghosts” and more. If that weren’t enough, they add a whole bushel of groan inducing jokes to their set. As a father who lives for a good “Dad Joke” you can bet that I take notes so I can repeat the jokes ad nauseam at home.
Villains A Go Go
Throughout most of the year, Disney villains are sparse on the ground. However, they come out in full force during the Halloween season. Though there’s no Boo to You parade this year, you can catch villainous character cavalcades featuring the music from Boo To You. The Evil Queen, Oogie Boogie, and others parade down the street. They’re all great, but I’ll admit that none are quite my favorite. There’s one particular villain that I wait every year to see: Mike Yagoobian, aka The Bowler Hat Guy, from Meet the Robinsons. He’s a semi-obscure character, so I’m always thrilled to see him dancing down the street. Should you find yourself in parks and you see a grown man jumping up and down, clapping and pointing as Mike Yagoobian passes by, please just let me be. I’m busy mortifying my children.
Characters in Costume
Seeing my favorite characters out and about in the park always makes me happy, but I absolutely LOVE see them dressed up in their Halloween costumes. You can see Mickey, Minnie, Goofy, and Donald all decked out in costumes. They parade down Main Street as part of the character cavalcades, complete with music from the Boo To You parade. Drift over to the Crystal Palace and you might also see Winnie-The-Pooh, Eeyore, Piglet, and Rabbit all dressed up for Halloween. I don’t know about you, but I always want to boop the big red nose that Eeyore wears as part of his clown costume.
There’s a lot more that I could say, but I think those give you a good idea of my favorite things at the park. What do you love about Walt Disney World at Halloween?
